Description / Abstract:
SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION
This standard specifies torque-tension test requirements for
prevailing-torque type steel metric
hex nuts and hex flange nuts,
- with hex nut nominal thread diameters M6 thru M24
- with hex flange nut nominal thread diameters M6 thru M20
- of property classes 9 and 10
- with mechanical and performance properties in conformance with ANSI
B18.16.1M-1979.
- with a surface finish which is either cadmium electroplated with a
supplementary EP (extreme
pressure) lubricant, or phosphate coated (zinc or manganese) with a
rust preventative oil
containing a substantial amount of an EP lubricant.
In some engineering assemblies, it is desirable to use
prevailing-torque nuts which have the
capability of developing, within controlled limits, a predictable
tensile load in the mating
externally threaded component when a specified nut tightening torque
is applied.
Unless otherwise noted, all references to nuts in this standard mean
prevailing-torque hex nuts and
hex flange nuts.
Note
The requirements of this Standard apply only to the combination of
laboratory conditions described
in the test method. If conditions other than those specified for the
torque-tension test are
present in an actual service application, (such as a different coating
or plating on the nut or
externally threaded part, different surface against which the nut is
torqued, etc.), torque values
must be adjusted in order to develop an equivalent tensile load in the
mating externally threaded
component.
