Description / Abstract:
This specification2 covers austenitic steel castings
for valves, flanges, fittings, and other pressure-containing parts
(Note I) intended for high-temperature and corrosive service (Note
2).
NOTE I-Carbon steel castings for pressure-containing parts are
covered by Specification A 216, and low-alloy steel castings by
Specification A 217.
NOTE 2-The committee formulating this specification has included
22 grades of materials extensively used for the present purpose. It
is not the intent that this specification should be limited to
these grades. Other compositions will be considered for inclusion
by the committee as the need arises: Since these grades possess
varying degrees of suitability for high-temperature and
corrosion-resistant service, it is the responsibility of the
purchaser to determine which grade shall be furnished, due
consideration being given to the requirements of the applicable
construction codes.
Twenty-three grades of austenitic steel castings are included in
this specification. Selection will depend on design and service
conditions, mechanical properties, and the high temperature and
corrosion-resistant characteristics.
The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the
standard.
2For ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
applications, see related Specification SA-3S I in Section II of
that code.
