Description / Abstract: These specifications cover iron-chromium and iron-chromium-nickel alloy tubular castings made by the centrifugal casting process. Design applications should consider removal of cast surfaces when machined surfaces and wall thickness are the basis of design.

NOTE-In the centrifugal casting of hollow cylinders, the molten metal is poured into a mould that is rotating at considerable speed. Centrifugal force pushes the metal radially outward in all directions during solidification, performing the same functions as risers and pouring heads in static castings. Therefore, the unsoundness due to shrinkage, etc. is concentrated near the inner circumference of the rough casting. The resulting layer of riser metal near the inner circumference must be removed by boring in order to make the casting suitable for applications requiring a clean, sound inner surface.

These specifications cover iron-chromium and iron-chromium-nickel tubular centrifugal castings with nominal outside diameters of 2 to 50 in. and nominal lengths of 2 to 18 ft. The minimum as-cast wall thickness shall not be less than ¼ in.

The grades of alloys covered by these specifications are those listed in the latest revisions of the Specifications for Corrosion-Resistant (ASTM Designation: A 296)3 and Heat-Resistant (ASTM Designation: A 297)3 Iron-Chromium and Iron-Chromium-Nickel Alloy Castings for General Application. Other chemical compositions and physical requirements may be agreed upon by the manufacturer and the purchaser.

Supplementary requirements (Paragraphs S1 to S7) of an optional nature are provided where more critical inspection is required and shall apply only when specified in the contract or order. Supplementary requirements S5 and S7 may be specified only on castings furnished with machined surfaces.

A statement of the application for which the casting is intended, related drawings, and finished dimensions including minimum wall thickness should accompany the inquiry, contract or order.
