This paper compares total organic carbon (TOC) removal, DBP precursor removal as measured by the formation of trihalomethanes (THM) and haloacetic acids (HAA), and individual THM and HAA species concentrations from different treatment regimes. In this treatment process chlorine serves as the only disinfectant and it is applied after granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption. The quality of water from this treatment process was compared to six alternative trains: conventional/prechlorination (Conv/preC12); post filtration ozonation (ozone); post filtration ozonation and biotreatment (O3/Bio); post-ozonation with GAC adsorption (ozone/RSSCT); post ozonation and biotreatment with GAC adsorption (O3/Bio/RSSCT); and, nanofiltration of nonchlorinated sand filter effluent. This study concentrated on unit processes occurring after coagulation/sedimentation.
