The American Water Works Company (AWWC) owns and operates more than 130 water treatment facilities in 22 states. The AWWC has utilized particle counters in drinking water treatment evaluations for almost a decade. Since 1990, numerous AWWC surface water facilities have installed on-line particle counters, the major impetus for this being to better ensure that processes are optimized for the removal of parasitic pathogens. All of AWWC's on-line particle counters have been equipped with computers, and manufacturer-supplied software or integrated with supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems for data collection. This paper discusses AWWC's experiences with particle counters including installation, performance and resulting treatment process enhancements. The paper also discusses the computerized handling of data and SCADA interfaces. Typical particle counter installation problems are addressed and on-line performance of particle counters is compared for several AWWC treatment facilities.
