Description / Abstract: Painting Bare Steel

a.Shop Painting

For the purposes of this Guide, repainting steel from an existing bridge that is returned to a shop qualified to clean existing steel by blast cleaning to an acceptable surface condition (see section 11) and recoating is subject to the same requirements as newly fabricated steel.

A shop may be either a permanent painting shop that may be part of a steel fabricator's plant, a separate painting shop, or a temporary shop constructed at or near the bridge site to repaint the steel where environmental conditions during paint application will be within the recommended temperature and humidity ranges. A covered shelter does not necessarily constitute a shop.

The shop-applied coating may include an initial coat or multiple coats as specified by the Owner or, if acceptable to the Owner, as elected by the Contractor.

b. Field Painting

This Guide contains requirements, including applicable environmental regulations, for the Contractor to meet, when field painting of new structural steel is specified or allowed.
