Description / Abstract:
Scope and Purpose
The standard of acceptable concentrations of formaldehyde
applies to all places of employment.
The purpose of this standard is to describe concentrations of
form~ldehyde in the atmosphere of work places which are permissible
with respect to safety from certain adverse biological effects
within certain limitations of time. The standard is for guidance in
establishing control procedures for the protection of the health,
comfort, and well-being of workers.
Commercially and industrially formaldehyde is not often
encountered in pure form. Formaldehyde is marketed chiefly as
aqueous solutions containing about 36 to 50 percent by weight
dissolved formaldehyde (HCHO) (11.· United States Pharmacopeia
(USP) solution contains 37 percent formaldehyde and sufficient
methanol (7 to 15 percent by weight) to prevent precipitation of
polymer under storage and transport conditions) Industrial
solutions may have as little as 1 percent methanol and up to 50
percent formaldehyde. Other commercial forms are the polymeric
hydrate, paraformaldehyde [HO·(HCHO)n·OHI, and the cyclic polymer,
trioxane (HCHO)3'
The major use of formaldehyde and its polymers is in the
synthetic resin industry. Other uses are in the manufacture of
textiles, paper, fertilizer, miscella'neous resinous products, and
specialty chemicals. One of its uses, that in the permanent press
garment industry, has resulted in notable human t!xposure to vapor
inhalation.
This standard does not prescribe expos, ure limits for
simultaneous exposure to methanol or other compounds.
