Description / Abstract:
It is recognized that various degrees of precision and accuracy
are required in the practical measurement of sounds of various
kinds for different purposes. Hence, this standard provides the
minimum requirements for three basic types of sound level meters:
Types 1, 2. and 3, with performance requirements that become
progressively less stringent, proceeding from Type I to Type 3.
Further, it is recognized that sound level meters may be desired
for special purposes that do not require the complexity of any of
the three basic types. Therefore, provision is made for a special
purpose sound level meter, Type S. The Type S meter can be
qualified to the performance of any of the basic types (I, 2, and
3), but is not required to have all three weighting networks.
Purpose. The purpose of this American National
Standard for Sound Level Meters and their calibration is to ensure
maximum practical accuracy in any particular sound level meter. and
to reduce to the lowest practical minimum any difference in
corresponding readings with various makes and models of meters that
meet the standard.
